On Wednesday, Rangers in Gozo testified in the Gozo Court regarding a case of illegal trapping of finches.

In March, Rangers from the Malta Ranger Unit in Gozo had detected a male individual illegally trapping in Qala during the closed season.

The Rangers said that Victoria Police arrived swiftly on the scene after their assistance had been requested.

“As soon as the accused noticed the Police walking in on the trapping site, he tried to run away from them but failed,” the MRU said.

“The Police apprehended the accused who was then led on site in handcuffs and the site was dismantled and all equipment confiscated,” the Rangers said.

On Wednesday, the case was heard in the Gozo Court and the Malta Rangers said that they are now awaiting the sentencing. A Ranger from the MRU presented the evidence gathered on the day with clear footage of the offence.

The Malta Ranger Unit expressed its thanks to the Police Officers for their service. “Their swift action played a crucial role in safeguarding the Maltese biodiversity.
