A third seismic station has been installed on Gozo, this time at the University of Malta, Gozo Campus.

The stations form part of the Malta Seismic Network (MSN), which now consists of nine stations installed on Malta, Gozo and Comino.

The University of Malta explained that with the installation of more stations, the network can continue to serve its purpose to monitor and quantify regional seismicity in the Central Mediterranean by detecting and locating microearthquake activity close to our islands.

The network also serves to detect other geological activity, such as rockfalls and other natural phenomena and anthropogenic activity.

All the stations in the MSN are enabled to transmit continuous data to a central server at the University of Malta, so that any seismic activity can be detected and located in real time, it said.

More stations are planned to be installed in the near future to keep increasing the coverage and improving our understanding on the origin of seismic activities around our islands.

The Malta Seismic Network is maintained by Dr Daniela Farrugia, Dr Matthew Agius, and Prof. Sebastiano D’Amico, who form part of the Seismic Monitoring and Research Group within the Department of Geosciences.
