Two new vans have been inaugurated for the Gozo SPCA, funded by the Voluntary Organisations Project Scheme (VOPS) of the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS).

These vans are intended to be used as the organisation’s main vehicles by volunteers for various purposes. They will mainly transport animals to and from veterinary appointments, collect donated items to the organisation, feed stray cats as part of the services it offers and also rescue lost or abandoned animals.

The inauguration was attended by Minister for Inclusion and Volunteering Julia Farrugia and the CEO of MCVS Mauro Pace Parascandolo.

Minister Julia Farrugia said, “the projects and commitment of the Gozo SPCA are commendable. Their contribution to our community and animals is invaluable, which is why we have taken concrete initiatives as a government to help them work with more resources and effectiveness, for them and the rest of the voluntary organisations in our country.Gozo SPCA receives funding for two new vans“Beyond the financial investment, for the year 2025 we are working towards the creation of the first Volunteer Bank in our country. This is another initiative that reflects how much we as a government believe in the importance of volunteering,” the Minister said.

Mark Thorogood, manager of the Gozo SPCA, said, “our mission is to help abandoned cats and dogs in Gozo, whether they are strays, or animals whose owners can no longer keep them. We rescue and rehome around 250 animals every year. It is also worth mentioning that the vans, which help us both in animal rescue and fundraising, will also be used by the Gozitan branch of Nature Trust.”

He added that “Gozo SPCA is very grateful to MCVS for their generous support which allows us to continue to help the animals of Gozo.”

Mauro Pace Parascandalo thanked the organisation and particularly the volunteers for all the work they do. “The council is always there to provide support, both in terms of funding through the various schemes and also in terms of training and other assistance through the council’s ever-increasing services.”?
