Final works have now been completed on the upgrade of the Mgarr fishing port – in the dry-standing area, together with the supply of sophisticated trailers and a towing truck amounting to almost €900,000.

The project was launched in May 2019, with the works divided into different phases to avoid creating difficulties for working fishermen and other maritime activities in this port.

Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri together with the Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi announced that the project for the Rehabilitation of the Fisheries Infrastructure in Gozo under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund 2014 -2020 has now been completed.

The new facilities will serve not only to regenerate the respective sites but also to offer new services to fishermen, they said.

In the dry-standing area, equipment was installed which included a new winch and service pillars for the maintenance work on the vessels being carried out by fishermen in the area, as well as a system of CCTV cameras to monitor the same area. These works amounted to around € 95,000.

It was explained that in addition there was the supply of sophisticated trailers and a towing truck. These were obtained through a separate tender with a value of € 790,000, which includes five trailers of different sizes according to the standard required to accommodate the dimensions of all fishing vessels currently in the port of Mgarr, as well as a towing truck to pull these same trailers.Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri said that, “thanks to this equipment, a free service will be offered to all fishermen who have their craft inside this port, where they will be able to pick up and drop off their vessels, as well as being transported to boat yards around Gozo as required.”

Minister Camilleri added that with these works the Fisheries Infrastructure Rehabilitation Project in Gozo, which amounted to almost €900,000, is now complete.

He concluded by saying that this project will not only provide new infrastructure and a better working environment, but more security for Gozitan fishermen. The whole project, including the works carried out at Xlendi, amounts to €1.2 million.

Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi explained that in order for the trailer service and towing truck to be properly operated, there will be a section of workers who will be operating this equipment twenty-four hours a day.

He added that they have been given specialised training to keep this equipment in good condition as it will be constantly exposed to the elements of the sea.
