Independent candidate Arnold Cassola has warned that “history will condemn” those who approved the demolition of Chambray barracks.

He was referring to the Planning Authority’s approval on Thursday for plans the demolish and reassemble parts of the British-era barracks at Fort Chambray in Ghajnsielem, Gozo.

Cassola added that the building of further residential and commercial premises in the historical fort were approved too.

Both were on separate applications and approved five votes to two. Many objectors spoke up during the long sitting, but all to no avail.

“The uncultured people who approved this monstrosity, together with the PL and PN politicians who backed them, should be held personally responsible for the destruction of Maltese historical memory and identity,” stated Arnold Cassola.
