The Planning Board said that “in keeping with the 2012 approved outline permit,” it has granted permission for the dismantling and reinstatement of the south arcade of the British Barracks in Fort Chambray as the project moves into its final phase of works.

In a statement, the PA said that the third and final phase of this long-anticipated project includes several key works “designed to enhance and transform Fort Chambray while preserving its historic character.”

It explained that these works will include the construction of a Class 3B Aparthotel, comprising 64 en-suite rooms and suites, as well as 50 serviced apartments. Additionally, historic buildings such as Dar it-Tabib, the Naval Bakery, the Knights’ Barracks, and the Polverista area will be restored and integrated into the Aparthotel’s amenities.

The PA went on to say that the project will also include four distinct zones that will result in 105 “high-quality” residential units. Additionally, works will include internal alterations and partial demolition within the existing underground parking levels, along with further excavation to extend the two levels to accommodate the parking, servicing, and amenity needs of the project.

“The relocation and reconstruction of the Barracks’ façade within a different section of the Fort were extensively debated during the permit’s evaluation process,” the PA said. “Initially met with objections, the proposal gained acceptance after discussions concluded that its relocation will result in improved internal planning by moving the hotel further inwards within the enceinte and reducing its visual impact from seaward approaches to Gozo.”

The PA concluded by saying that “in consultation with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, it was agreed that, in addition to the south arcade, the west and east flanks, along with the façade located behind the arcade, would also be dismantled, reinstated, and integrated into the final master plan.”
