During an interview on NET TV and NET FM on Sunday morning, the Leader of the Nationalist Party, Bernard Grech, spoke about “several crises” the country is facing, including a “governance crisis.” He also pointed out how Robert Abela “hastily tabled a bill in Parliament within one week.”
Bernard Grech noted that “while Abela and his Government left crucial laws for the Maltese public gathering dust on the shelf for months and years, in just four days they drafted a law to try to save Abela and those around him, and then presented it in Parliament.”
The PN Leader spoke about the crisis in education and how this Government is “effectively throwing education out of the window.” This was in reference to the ongoing situation at MCAST, where teachers and lecturers have been fighting for their rights for over three years.
“Not only is this preventing those educators from doing their jobs properly, but it also means that some students are being forced to repeat the academic year, losing a year of study because of the mess created by Government’s disinterest,” Grech stated
He argued that “the situation in the country and its population is also symptomatic of a Government that has abandoned the helm. After bringing the country’s infrastructure – roads, electricity, water, sewage and services such as health – to its knees, now he has suddenly woken up and wants to try to do something.”
Grech went on to say that “the people are also suffering in another crucial sector healthcare. Today we are seeing a healthcare sector buckling under the pressure of increased numbers.”
“Because this Labour Government not only failed to plan for these increases, it means now healthcare workers are trying to hold together a hospital that risks collapsing at any moment.
“A doctor who once saw ten patients must now see twenty. It’s no wonder they can’t keep up and patients have to wait for hours,” the PN Leader stated.
All this, Bernard Grech said, clearly shows that “this country does not need a few small fixes here and there. It needs a complete change.”
