The Diocese of Gozo has announced the churches in Gozo in which, from the 11th of February until the end of the Jubilee Year in the Diocese on the 28th of December, the Plenary Indulgence can be gained in accordance with the directives of the Catholic Church; as well as the Jubilee Days in the Diocese during this same Holy Year.
The Jubilee Churches in the Diocese of Gozo will be:
The Cathedral Church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, Victoria; the National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu, Gharb; the Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception, Qala.
Jubilee Days
On March 9th, the First Sunday of Lent, a Diocesan Jubilee Pilgrimage will be held, while the following are some of the Jubilees that will be celebrated for particular categories:
the Jubilee of the Sick and Those Who Care for Them, on February 11;
the Jubilee of Sportspeople, on June 11;
the Jubilee of Religious and Consecrated People, on June 21;
the Jubilee of Priests, on June 27;
the Jubilee of the Elderly, on July 26;
the Jubilee of Catechists and Animators of Formation Groups, on October 18;
the Jubilee of Children, on November 20;
the Jubilee of Adolescents, on 21 November;
the Jubilee of Youth, on 22 November.
The Plenary Indulgence
In a Message to the Church in Gozo broadcast in all churches these days, the Bishop of Gozo Anton Teuma recalls that “the Plenary Indulgence is nothing other than another way for Christians to assure themselves of the boundless and freely given love that God has for us his people, shown in the gift of full forgiveness through the Church. This powerful sign of love demands from us a response of love.”
The Diocese said that ordinary conditions for receiving a Plenary Indulgence are that one: “repents and renounces all ties to sin, is moved by a spirit of charity (love), confesses, receives Holy Communion, prays according to the Pope’s opinion, and performs one of the following: a pilgrimage to one of the Jubilee Churches where one confesses and participates in prayer or celebration; a visit of worship to a Jubilee place where adoration, meditation, and prayer including the Our Father, the Creed and a prayer to the Blessed Virgin take place; a work of mercy and penance.”
The Jubilee of the Sick and Those Who Care for Them (11 February)
The sick and all the staff of the Hospital can obtain a Plenary Indulgence if they carry out what is requested, in one of the two chapels of the Gozo General Hospital. The sick who cannot leave their homes should pray penance, the Our Father, the Creed (in any legitimate form), and other prayers in line with the objectives of the Holy Year, while offering their sufferings or the sufferings of their lives.
