The government drug formulary is to be revised to reflect better access to mental health drugs, as well as improved prescribing rights for specialists and family doctors.
This was announced by the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing, highlighting the fact that the World Health Organisation (WHO) stated that mental health is a state of well-being that enables individuals to realise their potential, cope with the stresses of life, be productive at work, and make a contribution to their community. “Achieving sustainable mental health remains fundamental to our well-being.”
Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela said that evidence is showing that advances in medical care are proving to be effective in preventing and managing such conditions.
He explained how, through the Mental Health Strategy for Malta 2020-2030, the government is ensuring that those in need can receive the care and support they need within a community setting through community-based care strategies.
He went on to say that in light of all this, the government is reviewing and updating the Government Formulary to reflect access to the latest evidence-based treatment while also granting enhanced prescribing rights to specialists and family doctors, who can now submit applications for drug entitlements for a number of mental health conditions.
Specialists and family doctors will also be given access to specialist mental health services both in community mental health clinics and other mental health facilities, said Abela.
“This initiative is designed to simplify access to treatment and allow patients to receive timely care, directly in their communities. The National Health System is fostering a more integrated and holistic approach to care, which ultimately leads to improved mental health outcomes,” the Minister concluded.
