Earlier this evening the Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt announced new power and water tariffs that will come into force on the 1st of January 2010.

The Minister said that Enemalta made losses of €21.4 million, between April and December of this year, this was due to higher oil prices that would see Enemalta spending a considerable amount more next year for the same amount of oil.

The Ministry said the electricity tariffs for households were around the same as at October last year, however, there will be increases in the tariffs for garages, empty houses, summer houses and businesses.

Industry would be able to benefit from the energy fund announced by the Government in the budget, as well as taking advantge of the alternative day and night tariffs.

There will be an increase for both residential and non-resdential on water tariffs.

The tariff on meters remains unchanged. There will also be a new sewerage tariff, this will be covered by a government subsidy.
