As part of the Gozo Region of Culture initiative and the European Artistic Crafts Days, the Gozo Region is organising two workshops in Gozo on the Public Holiday – Monday, the 31st of March.

The workshops named – The Future of Craft: Digital Meets Handmade and Rethinking Waste: From Discarded to Designed – are being organised with the collaboration of the Gharb Local Council and the San Lawrenz Local Council respectively.

The Future of Craft: Digital Meets Handmade

This session explores how digital design and fabrication technologies such as 3D printing CNC milling and parametric modelling are expanding the possibilities of traditional craft. By combining computational tools with tactile, hands-on making, today’s designers are forging new relationships between concept and material, tradition and innovation.

Through presentations by two local studios, participants will learn how digital fabrication is being used not to replace but to augment handmade processes, fostering a new era of craft that is rooted in precision, material sensitivity and conceptual rigour:

This event is taking place on Monday, between 10:00 am -11:00 am and will be held at the Gharb Local Council Hall. Everyone is invited to attend.

Speakers for this Talk and Discussion will be:

i+a – A research-based studio working at the intersection of digital fabrication, performance, and architecture, with a focus on biomaterials and sustainable building strategies.

Sforma Studio – A Gozo-based design practice specialising in digitally fabricated lighting that draws inspiration from architectural and organic forms.

Rethinking Waste: From Discarded to Designed

This session brings together designers who are working at the intersection of waste reduction, material innovation, and sustainable design. As environmental concerns become ever more urgent, these practitioners are using discarded materials, from construction debris to industrial stone offcuts, to develop new design languages and production methods.

Those present will be able to explore how material that would traditionally be considered waste is now seen as a starting point for experimentation. This shift in perspective is not only ecological, but deeply cultural – challenging how everyone values resources, labour and aesthetics.

This event is also taking place on Monday, between 12:00pm – 1:00pm at the Centru Parrokkjali San Lawrenz – Pjazza San Lawrenz. The event is open to the general public – no reservation required.

Speakers for discussion will be:

Anna Horvath – Founder of SORGI, a design project that reuses construction waste to create sculptural public seating and urban furniture.

Tonya Lehtinen – Founder of Vogue Xchange, a sustainable fashion initiative in Gozo that began as a small clothing swap and evolved into a thriving vintage and pre-loved clothing shop.
