The Left-think tank organisation Zminijietna said that it is commemorating Workers’ day with a “clear message to the political class to “reinforce collective bargaining and unionised workers.”

“Workers in the private sector are still finding it difficult to join a union,” stated Zminijietna.

The organisation added that “data from the NSO of 2024 shows that out of a total workforce of 325,631, only 109,259 are members of a trade union. This means that only one in three are represented by a union.”

“Therefore, Zminijietna once again stresses that a ‘mandatory union’ or a formation of sectoral agreements is a way forward for better working conditions,” it said. “One can hardly imagine an improvement in the working conditions without an increase in the number of unionised workers.”

“The Nationalist Party has remained silent on this phenomenon, while the Labour Party in Government continues to drag its feet on this issue of national importance. The Labour migration policy was a step forward but not enough to address precariousness,” added Voice of the Left.

It warned that, “the lack of Union representation in the labour market is undermining the level of achievements workers got in their rights since independence. Precariousness is becoming the order of the day in every sector of the economy.”

Zminijietna ended the press statement calling for a “mandatory union policy and the formation of various sectoral agreements targeting the care sector, security, food courier, y-plate taxis and the franchise industry.”
