The new Prime Minister of Malta, Dr Joseph Muscat gave his first address to the nation earlier this evening. He that following the election result it’s now time to deliver and the outcome was a strong message that a new style of Government was what the people wanted.

The Prime Minister said that the Government would take the decisions that are needed, but would keep its feet on the ground, even though it had such a large majority.

He said that first priority for the Government is to pass the 2013 Budget that had been presented by the Nationalist Government and it will be retained, except for an amendment to abolish the tax for those on the minimum wage.

Other priorities mentioned by the Prime Minister included a new energy policy, the Whistleblower’s Act, elmination of prescription for crimes related to politics, new law on party financing, reform of the justice system by the end of the year, implementation of a new IVF law and parole.

The Prime Minister concluded by saying that “this is an important moment for our country, a change in course is needed towards economic growth that will everyone. Everyone’s help is needed in order to achieve this, as well as the need to be united as one country, to ensure that Malta belongs to us all.”
