From Square to Square is a new initiative through which various squares around the Maltese Islands will be hosting cultural activities.

This initiative is aimed at creating artistic and cultural experiences in the heart of Maltese communities – the squares. In Gozo, events will be taking place in Kercem and San Lawrenz.

Minister for Cultural Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, together with the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, explained that this initiative consists of a series of performances, local films, community and interactive activities.

It was stated that the main aim is to transform squares into open spaces as centres of creativity. Through this initiative, art will be more accessible to all, while celebrating Maltese cultural identity while promoting community participation.

Minister Owen Bonnici said, “This initiative aims to continue to bring life to squares across Malta and Gozo through quality activities organised by local councils. The square, which has always been the heart of social life in our localities, will once again become a vibrant space where art and community come together in experiences that shape and strengthen our cultural identity.”

Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli said that this is another initiative from the number of initiatives being launched for Local Councils, where the Local Government Division will be allocating around €25,000 for each cultural activity that will be held.

In Malta the localities taking part are Birgu, Gharghur, Gzira, Senglea, Kalkara, Marsaskala, Mosta, Mtarfa, Tal-Pieta, Qormi, Qrendi, Rabat and Zejtun.
