Earlier this week a conference was held in Victoria for the – Empty Nesters – parents whose children will be leaving their home in Gozo to start a course at the University of Malta.

The meeting was held in the hall of Sir M.A. Refalo Sixth Form in collaboration with the Diocese of Gozo and the Sixth Form administration. It was led by psychologist Dr Michael Galea, with an introduction by Ms Bernardette Attard, Guidance Teacher of this school.

Among the points raised, Dr Galea spoke about the problems that can arise in the relationship between parents and children when they find themselves in this situation. He stressed the attitude that parents should have towards their children – “neither abandoning them completely nor considering them as small children.”

Dr Galea explained what changes are expected to occur, both mentally and emotionally, in the relationship between parents and children, as well as between the parents themselves.

He also spoke about the difficulties that the children encounter when they find themselves alone in Malta, including the influence of the media as well as drugs and alcohol.

Finally, he placed great emphasis on the importance of honest and open communication between parents and children.
