Xlendi Shipwreck Festival celebrating a remarkable maritime pastThe Xlendi Shipwreck Festival will be an evening celebration of Xlendi’s remarkable maritime past, taking place along this vibrant waterfront on the 29th and 30th of August.

Heritage Malta’s Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit, with the support of the Munxar Local Council and the Malta Airport Foundation, is inviting the public to experience a unique opportunity in uncovering the secrets of Gozo’s underwater heritage.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Xlendi Bay, this two-night event will feature an engaging programme for all visitors. Heritage Malta said they will be able to experience an immersive Virtual Reality dive showcasing the Xlendi Underwater Archaeological Park and the Phoenician Shipwreck, giving them the chance to explore these extraordinary sites without leaving the shore.

The festival will also include a display of artefacts recovered from the seabed off Xlendi, a 3D print model of the Phoenician shipwreck, and live demonstrations of advanced 3D scanning techniques that reveal the hidden details of Malta’s submerged history.

The festival will be held between 6pm and 10pm each evening along the Xlendi waterfront. Entrance is free and no prebooking is required.

Everyone is invited to go along and discover the fascinating stories hidden underwater and celebrate Gozo’s rich maritime heritage in an innovative and interactive way.

There will also be another opportunity this month when the public are being invited to step back in time and dive beneath the surface – virtually – during an event taking place at the Xlendi Tower in Gozo.

Organised by the Munxar Local Council, in collaboration with Heritage Malta’s Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit, the historical Xlendi Tower will once again open its doors to the public for a special open weekend – 16th and 17th of August – on Gozo’s scenic south-west coast.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the tower’s rich cultural history and enjoy panoramic views of Xlendi Bay, before discovering a hidden underwater world. For further details please click here.
