Bank of Valletta has pledged its support to the Malta Contemporary Art Foundation for 2010 and is one of the main patrons supporting MCA’s first exhibition for the year titled A New Generation, which was inaugurated on Thursday, the 14th of January, by the Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

The exhibition sees a group of 10 emerging Maltese artists exhibiting their works in the MCA’s new galleries at St James Cavalier in Valletta. The participating artists are Adrian Abela, George Mario Attard, John Paul Azzopardi, Maria Bonnici, Karen Caruana, Dustin J. Cauchi, Selina Scerri, Teresa Sciberras, Elisa Von Brockdorff and Michael Xuereb. These artists form part of the MCA’s Studio & Research Programme which commenced in November 2009.

Mr Roderick Chalmers, Chairman of Bank of Valletta addressed the audience during the inauguration and said, “Bank of Valletta – through our comprehensive CSR programme – has long been a champion of art, culture and heritage in Malta. On the Arts side we support both the visual and performing arts – and will continue to do so. We support both the ancient and the modern – and we do this because we recognise that in among today’s avant-garde we will find tomorrow’s heritage.”

The Malta Contemporary Art is a non-profit Foundation that was established in December 2008 to create a platform and discussion for contemporary art in Malta through a series of solo and group exhibitions by established and emerging Maltese and international artists. It also hosts a programme of film screening as well as a series of art related talks and critical for a. In 2010 it will commission a series of public art residencies, start a sponsored studio research programme for emerging Maltese artists as well as launch a quarterly project-based printed journal.

The exhibition is being curated by MCA Director Mark Mangion and will be open for the general public till the 7th of February 2010.
