The Chamber of Advocates said that it “fully supports” the call made by Dr Jonathan Joslin, leading consultant at Mater Dei Hospital, for the introduction of random roadside testing to be carried out by the Police.

In a statement, the Chamber stressed that “Malta should bring itself in line with its European counterparts by introducing oral fluid roadside testing and by granting the Police the authority to stop and test drivers at random.”

It noted that at present, Maltese law does not permit the use of oral fluid roadside testing – a procedure already adopted in several European countries.

The Chamber of Advocates concluded by saying that it believes that “this measure constitutes the only genuine deterrent capable of reducing fatalities and injuries on Maltese roads.”
