Left think-tank organisation Zminijietna said that it is “highly concerned” with the way the right to a safe and secure pavement from various obstructions is totally absent from local politics.
Zminijietna argued “that the Magistrate’s conclusion to take it against the Lands Authority in discriminating against a fruit seller in Gzira while permitting restaurant tables on the same pavement should be of concern.”
It added that, “this shows that the Authority is not fit for purpose on these issues. We demand for a just reform on the right to safe and secure pavements. The vulnerable are the ones that are suffering the most from this chaotic situation.”
Zminijietna said that “Local Councils should be given the right to be in charge of pavements and pathways. The use of bollards and security posts should be implemented in strategic areas to prevent overcrowding, obstructions and to propel people along designated walkways.”
Zminijietna concluded by saying that “Councils can make use of the bollards and security posts as a means to enforce laws.”
