A greening project of approximately 8,467 square metres at Ghammar Hill, Gozo, has been launched with the aim of enhancing biodiversity and providing a more accessible and enjoyable environment for visitors to the Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary in Gharb.
This project which includes among others the planting of around 900 trees and 900 shrubs and around 1,700 cubic metres of rubble walls will enhance local biodiversity and at the same time create a more accessible and pleasant environment for the thousands of visitors who visit the Sanctuary each yea, said Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri.
The Gozo Minister visited the project together with the Minister for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi.
Camilleri explained that “this project is precisely an example of the Government’s strategy for Gozo: An Island of Villages and the Vision for Gozo 2050 because projects such as these help us continue to beautify Gozo, make the environment more sustainable and attract quality tourism that seeks authentic experiences and that respects the natural environment.”
Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said that “this project shows how European funds are serving as a concrete tool to improve the quality of life, preserve the natural environment and offer more valuable spaces for the community. It is an investment that looks towards the future of Gozo in a sustainable way, while giving families and visitors the opportunity to enjoy more of the unique beauty of these areas.”
The project includes:
• Planting of endemic trees and shrubs, together with work on the soil to improve its organic quality.
• Installation of a modern water and irrigation system, including pumps, controllers and related infrastructure to ensure plant care.
• Restoration of traditional rubble walls, with coralline limestone, to maintain the rural and cultural character of the area in accordance with the standards of the competent authorities.
