World Arbor Day has been celebrated by Ghajnsielem Primary School students, who this morning teamed up with the Ghajnsielem Local Council and the Ministry for Gozo, to start the process of planting over 150 indigenous trees at Ta’ Passi fields.

Ta’ Passi fields is where the very popular Bethlehem f’Ghajnsielem Nativity Village is held annually.

The trees planted today included olives, citrus and pine and the students also had the opportunity to take a tree home with them to plant in their garden.

The Ghajnsielem Local Council said that the aim of this project is to enhance the beautiful fields, which at one time was used as a dumping ground, with trees and shrubs.

The trees will also help compensate for the pollution which is emitted into the air from the very busy Mgarr Road situated just a few metres away, the Council added.

The event commemorated the World Arbor Day.
