The Nationalist Party “believes in a Malta that rebuilds, a Malta that restores hope – a country that breathes new life into the Maltese and Gozitans,” said PN Leader Alex Borg.

The Leader of the PN, in a message delivered on social media, said that today, “our country is facing a serious challenge: one of the lowest birth rates in Europe. This is not just a statistic on paper. It is a clear sign of the difficult realities lived by thousands of young people and Maltese families who are trying to buy a home, who want to start a life together, but who hit a wall because of high prices, unaffordable loans, long working days and ever-rising daily expenses.”

He added that “many of us are living to work, instead of working to live. This is not the future we dream of for tomorrow’s Malta, and the Nationalist Party has long been pushing forward measures to improve the lives of the Maltese and Gozitans.”

He highlighted that at the beginning of this year, the PN put forward a full list of new proposals with the aim of giving people a better quality of life and finding a balance between work and family time. Among them was the proposal of a full year of paid leave for new parents – combining maternity and parental leave – giving families the essential flexibility they need.

The Nationalist Party believes in concrete, serious solutions that improve quality of life, said Borg.

“It is positive that the Government has finally recognised – and agreed with the PN – that there is a problem. It is also positive that Ramona Attard has acknowledged that what the PN proposed eight months ago – namely that new parents be given a full year of paid leave – is a sound proposal, to the extent that she tried to make it her own,” said Borg.

He noted that it now seems that this issue is “worrying Finance Minister Clyde Caruana and Labour MPs who are telling us that Malta has a crisis because not enough Maltese children are being born – this after years of a Labour Government placing its inner circle before our families.”

The Nationalist Party calls on Clyde Caruana and Ramona Attard to “support its proposal to extend parental leave to a full year, so that parents can spend more time with their children,” said the Leader of the PN.

He stressed that “the vision of the PN is one of a Malta that safeguards the right of the family to spend time together. A Malta where families can buy their own home without becoming slaves to work. A Malta where the environment around us gives us life and energy instead of suffocating us.”

“This is not simply politics,” stated Borg. “This is the safeguarding of our identity, our lives, the Malta we want to pass on to our children.”

“This is the moment to give our country new life – This is the moment to ensure that our Malta remains Maltese,” he concluded.
