Momentum is demanding full pension justice for pre-1962 pensioners, saying that “when, over two years ago, Prof. Arnold Cassola first broke the news about the discrimination between pre-and post-1962 born pensioners, which could reach up to 82 euros a week, Minister Michael Falzon’s first reaction was to call him a liar.”

The Party added that eventually, the government realised this discrepancy was very real, and started giving 9+ euros a week in 2024 and 11+ euros a week in 2025 to redress this discrepancy.

Carmel Asciak, Momentum Spokesperson, stated, “it is positive that the government has started to redress this discrepancy. However, till now, only about 25,000 pre-1962 born pensioners have benefitted from these sums, namely those who had high salaries and therefore paid the highest rate of social security contributions during their working life.”

He argued however that “another circa 60,000 pre-1962 born pensioners, who paid lower rates of social contributions, have not been given a euro cent, despite a number of them having paid contributions for over 40 years.”

Asciak stated, “Momentum is therefore urging the government to, apart from setting aside in the next budget a respectable sum for 2026 for the 25,000 who had paid the highest rate of social contributions during their working life, another substantial sum is put aside for a pro-rata payment to the 60,000 pre-1962 born pensioners who -till now- have not seen an euro to make up for the gap with their post-1962 counterparts.”

“All pensioners, who contributed for so many years to our country’s well being, deserve full pension justice,” concluded Carmel Asciak.
