Gozo SPCA has announced that their Animal Welfare Officer, the intrepid Peter Camilleri, rescued a starving Red Setter X Spaniel from the depths of Wied il-Ghasri on Thursday.

With access from the steps down to the bay impossible to use because of the pounding seas, brave Peter clambered down the steep side of the wied to reach the dog, which had been reported as trapped there for some time. Gozo CPD personnel were on hand to lend assistance, but Peter was able to reach the dog himself. Then the dog was passed, man to man up the valley side; by this stage he was in a state of collapse, probably through lack of food.

Once at the top, Bobbi as Peter named him, wolfed down a tin of dog food and after a rest regained enough strength to walk to the rescue van. He looks to be in good condition, although now rather thin. He has a lovely sleek coat and it is thought that he may have become separated from his owner, although he was wearing no collar when found. He is now recovering at Gozo SPCA Centre. Gozo SPCA personnel said that they are once again at their wits end to know what to do with all the dogs being brought to the Centre – 9 in the past week, puppies as well as adult dogs. They said that Currently they are resorting to keeping small dogs in cat cages – a totally unsuitable and unsatisfactory situation. The need for new premises becomes ever more urgent.
