With Christmas just around the corner, a season traditionally associated with peace, reflection and family life, VallettaResidents (Independent Social Group) said that it wishes to make a “clear and measured appeal to the Valletta Local Council Administration and members as well as to all local councils across Malta and Gozo, to Members of Parliament, to public authorities and public units – please – think twice before issuing permits left, right and sideways.”
It insisted that “residents of Malta and Gozo deserve peace, safety and dignity this Christmas.”
The Group said that it fully acknowledges and encourages the festive spirit. “Christmas should indeed be a time of joy, social gatherings and economic activity. However, for residents living in historic and densely populated localities, this period increasingly comes with anxiety rather than comfort.”
It pointed out that “residential neighbourhoods, already under pressure throughout the year, are once again at risk of being transformed into de facto catering and entertainment zones, with little regard for the people who actually live there. Our slogan remains persistent – The right of one, must not undermine the right of another.”‘ The Group argued that “for many residents, this does not merely mean inconvenience. It means disrupted rest, heightened noise levels, blocked pavements, and limited access to their own homes. During Christmas, when families gather and vulnerable individuals – including the elderly, persons with disabilities and young children – are more present at home, these impacts are felt more acutely.”
It noted that “entertainment should be enjoyed fully, but responsibly. Establishments are licensed to operate within their premises, not beyond them. Music, festivities and social activities belong indoors, where they can be properly managed without imposing on surrounding homes or public spaces. Public streets and pavements are not private extensions of commercial outlets.”
The Group insisted that “beyond quality of life, there is a serious matter of public safety. The obstruction of pavements, streets and access routes poses real risks in case of emergency. Emergency services must have unimpeded access at all times.”
It added that “residents, visitors, staff members and even the clients of the establishments themselves may find themselves at risk if evacuation routes, entrances or thoroughfares are blocked. Responsibility in this regard is not optional; it is a duty.”
“We therefore appeal, particularly during this sensitive Christmas season, for caution, consideration and restraint. We urge all establishments to act responsibly, to respect the limits of their permits, and to ensure that no public space is obstructed. We also call on local councils, enforcement bodies and public authorities to carry out their obligations impartially and proactively, rather than reactively after harm has already been done,” said the Group.
VallettaResidents concluded by saying that “Christmas should not come at the cost of residents’ peace, safety and dignity. Valletta and other localities are living communities, not seasonal entertainment backdrops. Respecting that balance is essential….not only at Christmas, but all year round – For those who took time to read this, we wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas. Thank you – VallettaResidents (Independent Social Group).”
