Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri said that “today we are announcing a plan to add two new Gozo Channel ferries “to improve service and meet the growing needs of residents, students, workers and tourists.”

It was explained that following a study initiated in November 2023, a plan has been devised to ensure transport efficiency between Malta and Gozo. Under this plan, by 2029, the fleet operating between the islands will consist of four passenger vessels and one dedicated cargo ship.

He said that “a new 250-car capacity vessel will be purchased, specifically designed to meet peak demand. A smaller 75-car capacity vessel will be purchased, offering greater flexibility in service throughout the day.”

The Gozo Minister explained that “both are expected to enter service in early 2029. At the same time, the three Ta’ Pinu, Gaudos and Malita ferries will be retrofitted.”

He added that “in addition, a call for a chartered vessel will be issued to possibly replace the MV Nikolaos, ensuring that the service remains stable and reliable.”

The MV Nikolaos or the ship that is chartered in its place will be used as a cargo ship to improve logistics between the two islands, Camilleri said.

The Minister said that in the coming weeks, an international naval architecture firm will be appointed to draft the specifications for the ships. A task force will also be launched to address the infrastructure at Mgarr Port. The project, excluding the Mgarr port infrastructure, is expected to cost €130 million. The operation of the two new vessels is projected to commence at the beginning of 2029.

The Gozo Minister concluded by saying that “all this is part of a serious and long-term investment to ensure stronger connectivity between Malta and Gozo.”
