The Planning Authority is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the Irrestawra Darek 2026 grant scheme for Regjun Punent, following an exceptionally strong response from the public.
The Authority explained that funding is being allocated regionally and launched on a staggered basis to ensure orderly uptake, as shown below.
Within just four days, the scheme was fully subscribed and oversubscribed, with applications exceeding the regional allocation available.
The Authority thanked all applicants from Regjun Punent for their “enthusiasm and active participation, which has contributed to the positive outcome of this initiative.”
The Planning Authority launched the Irrestawra Darek 2026 Grant Scheme at the end of January and is a national initiative aimed at preserving Malta and Gozo’s historic built environment through the restoration of traditional façades and scheduled heritage structures located within Urban Conservation Areas (UCAs).
€30 Million Distributed Across Regions – Funding is allocated regionally and launched on a staggered basis to ensure orderly uptake:
Regjun Punent – €4.5m (the scheme was fully subscribed and oversubscribed, with applications exceeding the regional allocation available)
Regjun Nofsinhar – €5m
Regjun Ghawdex – €1.5m
Regjun tal-Port – €9m
Regjun Tramuntana – €3.5m
Regjun Lvant – €6.5m
The Planning Authority explained that the financial allocation per region reflects the number of traditional dwellings within each region. Unused funds may be reallocated based on uptake.
A new application window will open shortly for the next region in line – Regjun Nofsinhar. The Planning Authority said that it will issue a public announcement with the relevant dates and details once the next regional phase will be open to receive expressions of interest.
