In January, the seasonally adjusted monthly unemployment rate rose to 3.4%, the National Statistics Office said today. This was an increase of 0.2 percentage points the previous month and and an increase of 0.1 percentage points when compared to the same month in 2025.

The number of unemployed persons was 11,906, an increase of 7.1% on the previous month and an increase of 7.9 on the same month in 2025.

The NSO noted that the 25 to 74 age group was once again the major contributor to the overall level of unemployment at 7,958 or 66.8%. The figure for unemployed youths amounted 3,948 or 33.2%.

The unemployment rate for males stood at 3.5%, increasing by 0.2 percentage points on the previous month while the rate for females stood at 3.2%, also showing an increase of 0.2 percentage points on the previous month.

The unemployment rate for persons aged 15 to 24 years (youth unemployment rate) increased by 0.7% to 12.8% when compared to the previous month, while the rate for those aged between 25 and 74 years stood at 2.5%, an increase of 0.2 percentage points on the previous month.
