Speaking during a mass rally in Xaghra on Friday, Prime Minister Robert Abela said that ”a key goal of the Party Manifesto is that connectivity between Malta and Gozo will increase by 25%.”
He said that in recent months 100 proposals for Gozo have been written with a comprehensive and detailed plan and went on to unveil ten key proposals contained in the Labour Electoral Manifesto, which are divided into three pillars, connectivity, infrastructure and identity.
Regarding connectivity, the Prime Minister announced how by the end of the legislature connectivity between Gozo and Malta will increase by 25%. This is through more fast ferry connections, including from the South of Malta.
“By the end of the legislature we will increase connectivity between Gozo and Malta by 25%. More fast ferry connections, also from the South of Malta through an investment of €130 million in new ships for the Gozo Channel, including a cargo service. And the start of an air taxi service between the two islands.”
He also announced that the Labour Government will invest in the port of Mgarr, and also Marsalforn to be a link in the sea transport network. The Talllinja on demand service will also be starting in Gozo.
“For those who use the fast ferry for work or study, we have a support scheme. That will now rise to €800 per year, and when you get back to Gozo, you will have the same public transport as in Malta.”
The Prime Minister also claimed that the ”largest environmental project in Gozitan history will be embarking on as the Victoria Park tender has now been allocated.”
Among the ten proposals he mentioned is how every Gozitan business that invests in reskilling or upskilling its workers will be given a grant of €1,000 for each worker.
On the subject of health in Gozo, the Prime Minister said that there will be a new pharmacy equipped with robotics in the Gozo hospital to prepare chemotherapy on site.
Dr Abela noted how today there are 5,000 more Gozitans working than before and for the first time the Gozitan economy has exceeded one billion euros, ”growing at twice the rate observed in Europe.”
The Prime Minister concluded by urging ”every Gozitan and Maltese to unite behind the Labour movement so that together we can work for the youth of Gozitans, for Gozitan couples, for the elderly of Gozitans and for every Maltese and Gozitan.”
