Provisional data show that the January index of industrial production increased by 1.4 per cent over the previous month and by 14.6 per cent over the corresponding month of 2009.

Monthly comparison

When comparing January 2010 with the previous month, the index of industrial production increased by 1.4 per cent to 100.6 points. At the main industrial grouping level, the production of energy and capital goods went up by 14.5 and by 6.1 per cent respectively. Similarly, consumer goods rose by 1.0 per cent on account of a 2.4 per cent increase in the production of non-durable consumer goods, while an 8.4 per cent drop in the production of consumer durable goods was recorded. The production of intermediate goods declined by 1.6 per cent.

Annual comparison

Year-on-year data show that industrial production rose by 14.6 per cent, from 87.9 points in January 2009. Underpinning this rise was a 41.0 per cent increase in the production of intermediate goods, and a 7.8 and 14.8 per cent increase in the production of energy and capital goods respectively. On the other hand, the production of consumer goods fell by 6.1 per cent on account of an 8.5 per cent drop in the production of non-durable consumer goods.
