This was stated by Leader of the Nationalist Party Alex Borg stated that ”Gozo and Gozitans cannot continue waiting for a general election to be around the corner for the Government to remember them, as is happening now.”

He stressed that ”a new Nationalist Government will ensure that Gozitans have infrastructure that works, connectivity that reduces wasted time, and safer communities that give families peace of mind.”

PN Leader Alex Borg, was addressing a press conference in Gozo on Saturday morning, accompanied by PN candidates for the 13th electoral district Norma Camilleri, Beppe Galea, Luke Said and Frank Anthony Tabone.

The PN Leader explained how, after years of neglect in Gozo, the Government has now ”panicked and launched a series of works all at once to give the impression that a lot of infrastructural work is being carried out. What it failed to do in four years, it is now trying to do in four weeks – the four weeks before the election.”

Alex Borg listed a number of promises and projects Labour had pledged for Gozo which, he said, ”remained on paper after being promised in various Labour Party electoral manifestos.”

These include the Mgarr Harbour project with innovative facilities, the breakwater and multi-level car park in Marsalforn, the new General Hospital, roadworks and the creation of parking spaces, the Xlendi Masterplan and the Gozo Court.

The PN Leader stated that ”press conferences are now even being held when a project is not yet completed – as happened recently when a press conference was held on the Marsalforn road, despite only 60% of the project having been carried out.”

While saying that Gozo needs ”long-term planned infrastructure – not projects that suddenly appear before an election” – the Leader of the Nationalist Party explained the PN’s vision for Gozo across several sectors, so that workers who cross daily between Malta and Gozo, students, patients, businesses, fishermen, farmers and families can enjoy a better quality of life.

Among others, the PN Leader listed the following proposals:

A larger and more functional Mgarr Harbour, with parking for Gozitans – a project to be carried out in consultation with stakeholders and also linked to investment in Cirkewwa

An alternative small port developed with respect for its environmental impact, and two new vessels: one for passengers and another for cargo

Sea connectivity for cargo, with a specific schedule to the Grand Harbour and later to the Freeport, to reduce road congestion in Malta

A breakwater in Marsalforn so that this tourist centre can fulfil its potential and those who earn their living there no longer face uncertainty

New parking facilities in Rabat, Marsalforn and Xlendi, and better organisation of existing parking areas through projects that also create recreational green spaces for families

A new 400-bed hospital as part of the national hospital network, with modern technology and a helipad close to the Emergency Department

On safety in localities, the PN Leader said that ”this should not only be measured by major crimes or cases we hear about in the news, but should begin with the basics – visible police presence in the community, support services close to victims, and a court operating in an adequate environment.”

In this context, Alex Borg presented a number of further PN proposals for this important sector:

A safe place for victims of domestic violence in Gozo, where victims can find a secure, private and dignified place and receive the support they need

A specialised Police squad against drugs, trafficking and the exploitation of persons

A modern Gozo Court operating in an adequate environment and equipped for today’s needs Improved road safety through a speed camera in Triq l-Im?arr to help prevent further fatal and serious accidents in the area

Alex Borg concluded by saying that Gozitan and Maltese people and families will remain the priority for the Nationalist Party.

“Gozo needs politics that delivers, not politics of ribbons and press conferences. It needs modern infrastructure without losing its identity, and safer communities that give people peace of mind. Only a new Nationalist Government can give this Fresh Start to Gozo and to Gozitans.”
