The Victoria Local Council said that the 10th of June 1887 is a historic and special date not only for the City of Victoria but for the whole of Gozo. It was on this day that what was then known as Rabat, Gozo, was granted city status and began to bear the name City of Victoria.

The Council explained that from that day onwards, Gozo had its own city, joining the other cities of Malta in what marked an important milestone in the history and identity of our island.

Every year, the Victoria Local Council said it organises and supports a number of activities to commemorate this anniversary in a manner befitting its significance and dignity.

This year, the highlight of the celebrations will take place on the 10th of June in Independence Square, during a musical evening under the direction of two distinguished conductors from Victoria, Mro Dr John Galea and Mro Colin Attard.

The Council said that during the event, the highest honour bestowed by the City of Victoria, the ‘Gieh il-Belt Victoria’ award, will be presented, together with several recognitions to residents of Victoria whose work, dedication, and achievements have brought honour and distinction to the city.

The Victoria Local Council extended and invitation to resident to join them for this evening of remembrance, recognition, and celebration of the history, culture, and people who make Victoria the city it is today.
