Inspector Elliot Magro has been appointed Commissioner for Animal Welfare. The Parliamentary Secretariat for the Environment said that the Commissioner ”aims to promote and protect animal welfare, as well as safeguard the rights and protection of animals in Malta and Gozo.” His appointment will take effect from the 20th of July.

Inspector Magro has served in the Police Force for over twenty-one years, having served as a Police Inspector for the last eleven years. Throughout his career he has conducted investigations, prosecuted hundreds of cases before the Courts and held various leadership positions.

For the past few years he has been responsible for the Environment Protection Unit, where he has led enforcement related to environmental crimes and cases of animal cruelty and mistreatment. He holds an Honours degree in Criminology, a Diploma in Policing, various international certifications related to the enforcement of environmental crimes and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Criminology at the University of Malta.

His commitment to animal welfare was also recognised in 2022 during the Animal Honours Awards organised on the occasion of World Animal Day, when he was awarded the Commissioner’s Special Award for the Fair Treatment of Animals in recognition of his dedication to the enforcement of laws related to animal cruelty and mistreatment.

Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said thanked Dr Fleur Abela for her service and work as Commissioner for Animal Welfare and for her commitment to animal welfare during her mandate.

The Parliamentary Secretary wished Inspector Elliot Magro every success in this new role and said that she looks forward to continuing to strengthen the work in favour of animal protection and welfare.
