Gozitan MP Beppe Galea, Shadow Minister for the Voluntary Sector, has highlighted the impact on Gozo of the recent electricity outages – ”What is happening is unacceptable.”

In a statement, Galea said that ”the issue continues to affect families, vulnerable people and businesses across our island.”

The Shadow Minister warned that ”elderly people are being forced to leave their homes. People with health conditions are resorting to sitting in their cars just to have air conditioning. New mothers are facing even greater challenges in caring for their babies.”

”Electricity is a necessity, not a luxury,” stated Galea. ”We are now facing a national crisis. It is becoming increasingly clear that this Government has no idea how it is going to solve it.”

Beppe Galea stressed that ”words are easy. Facts are what matter. And the facts are these:”

• This summer alone, people have endured daily power cuts for weeks.

• This crisis has been affecting us regularly during this time of year for several years.

• The works the Government claimed would solve the problem have failed to do so. They have not even reduced its impact.

• The only conclusion is that the investment that was promised was poorly planned or poorly executed. It is the families and businesses of Gozo and Malta who are paying the price.

The Gozitan MP argued that ”the people cannot continue paying for incompetence. Compensation is a duty, not a favour. The public has every right to demand it.”

Beppe Galea concluded by saying that ”the Government has an obligation to deliver urgent solutions to this crisis.”
