Victoria Local Council Mayor Brian Azzopardi has said that ”there is no doubt that the opening of Triq Gorg Pisani is helping to ease some of the traffic congestion that builds up on Triq ir-Repubblika.”
He pointed out that however,” it is equally true that there have been a large number of accidents at the crossroads between Triq Viani, Triq l-Ewropa, Triq is-Sellun and Triq Gorg Pisani,” noting one such accident on Wednesday on Triq Gorg Pisani.
The Mayor said that ”as a Council, together with the Police, we have already written to Transport Malta regarding this danger and have put forward a concrete proposal: that a traffic light system be introduced at this junction, with traffic allowed to proceed from one road at a time, alternating between the different roads.”
Mayor Azzopardi explained that ”both the Council and the Police, during the meetings we have held, believe that traffic-calming measures alone will not eliminate these accidents. What is needed is a solution that clearly and safely regulates the flow of traffic at this junction.”
”This is not simply a matter of inconvenience… we are talking about road safety and protecting people’s lives,” he said.
The Victoria Mayor concluded by saying that, ”we hope that Transport Malta will give this proposal the attention it deserves and that action will be taken before we have a more serious accident.”
