The Gozo Tourism Association has said that it welcomes the long awaited news of the laying of the mooring buoy off Xlendi Bay, which was carried out over the weekend.
The GTA said that this facility will definitely act as an added tool to further enhance cruise liner business around the island of Gozo thus benefitting tourist service establishments on the island. However these stop-overs can also prove to be potentially effective as added opportunities for the promotion of the island as a distinct destination.
The Association added that its stand on this initiative has gone through a long journey to convince, lobby and argue in favour of mooring facilities around the Gozitan coastline. The laying of this buoy is a step in the right direction hopefully serving the means of putting Gozo on the routes of small Cruise liners.
Notwithstanding the length of time involved in the realisation of this project, the Gozo Tourism Association said it appreciates the difficulties that were encountered especially with regards to the positioning of this buoy. However, it added that the Gozitan tourism sector appreciates the collective efforts of all concerned whilst hoping that this mooring facility will provide the Gozitan tourism industry with another much needed opportunity to enhance the Gozitan offer.
Meanwhile the Gozo Tourism Association urged the Government to favourably consider the provision of other cruise liner mooring facilities on the south of the Island, so that the Gozitan coast would be in a better position to offer alternative mooring options from the prevailing north west winds.
