The Gozo Tourism Association (GTA) said that it has long been advocating for stronger security measures at coastal diving locations and once again calls upon the relevant authorities to install CCTV surveillance systems at key dive sites around the Gozitan coastline.
It added that ”such measures would serve as an effective deterrent against criminal activity and help safeguard both residents and visitors.”
The Association commended the group of divers who assisted in the apprehension of an individual caught stealing from their vehicles at one of the popular diving sites in Gozo, as well as the Gozo Police Force for their prompt response and subsequent arrest.
The GTA said that ”what was expected to be a routine Sunday dive at Cathedral Cave at Wied il-Ghasri, turned into the arrest of a suspected serial offender believed to have been targeting divers’ vehicles at various coastal locations in Gozo, on a number of occasions.”
The Association extended its appreciation to the divers ”whose vigilance and civic-minded actions contributed to the successful intervention. Their actions demonstrate the strong sense of community that exists within Gozo’s diving sector and helped prevent further losses to visitors and local divers alike.”
The GTA concluded by saying that ”Gozo enjoys an international reputation as one of the Mediterranean’s premier diving destinations. Enhancing security infrastructure at dive sites would further strengthen the island’s appeal and reinforce its reputation as a safe and welcoming destination for diving enthusiasts from around the world.”
