The Civil Protection Dept has issued warning on the fast changing sea conditions around the Maltese Islands.

The CiPD said that on Wednesday, five casualties were involved in four separate drowning incidents around our islands. It said that thankfully, none of these incidents resulted in a fatality.

The Mater Dei Hospital Emergency Department medical teams responded to these emergencies, assisted by the Civil Protection Department where required and, in some instances, by members of the public who also provided valuable assistance.

”As weather conditions begin to change, Wednesday’s incidents should serve as a clear warning of how quickly the sea can become dangerous,” said the CPD.

The CPD warned that ”rough seas, strong currents and sudden changes in conditions should never be underestimated. This is particularly important for visitors to our islands who may not be familiar with our coastline, local sea conditions or the power of the Mediterranean Sea.”

The CPD reminded everyone to:

• Check weather and sea conditions before entering the water.

• Avoid swimming in rough seas or when conditions are deteriorating.

• Never underestimate waves, currents or the distance back to shore.

• Follow warning flags, signs and instructions from lifeguards or authorities.

• Keep children under constant supervision when near the sea.

• If you see someone in difficulty, call 112 immediately. Do not attempt a rescue if doing so could place your own life or the lives of others in danger.

The CPD said that Wednesday had a fortunate outcome for five people, ”but it should serve as a serious warning to us all.”

”Respect the sea, know your limits and never take unnecessary risks, said the Civil Protection Department. ”Your actions should not put your own life, or the lives of those who may need to come to your assistance, in danger.”
