Enemalta has advised that the electricity supply is being ”progressively restored” across affected areas, following widespread power cuts this morning.
In Gozo, power was lost from around 8am. Some areas were restored within the hour. Large areas of Malta are still currently without power.
Malta is currently relying on local electricity generation, as the Malta-Sicily Interconnector (IC1) is temporarily switched off due to ongoing works in Sicily related to the second interconnector (IC2).
The temporary shutdown started on Monday and 12 days is required to isolate electrically the area where works will be carried out to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of workers in the high-risk electrical environment, Interconnect Malta and Enemalta said in a joint statement last Saturday.
Enemalta said that power has already restored in a number of localities following the activation of an automatic protection system designed to safeguard the national electricity system.
”The system automatically reduces electricity demand when necessary to prevent wider disruptions and protect from more serious damage,” it said.
Following the activation, Enemalta said that it ”immediately brought additional standby generation plants online to increase available capacity and restore electricity supply in a gradual and controlled manner.”
Enemalta concluded by saying that its technical teams ”continue to monitor the network closely to ensure grid stability as supply is restored to the remaining affected areas.”
