The review process for the Gozo Regional Development Strategy, has been announced by Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, which is three years after its initial publication.

It was explained that the aim is to evaluate the progress achieved and identify the priorities that will continue to guide the island’s development in the coming years. This review will serve as an opportunity to assess the island’s current standing – evaluating what has worked, what can be strengthened, and where a new direction is needed – to ensure the strategy continues to address the realities and aspirations of the Gozitan community.

Minister Camilleri stated that the Strategy must remain a ”dynamic document, capable of adapting to the realities and opportunities that arise over time.”

He stated, “This review is being undertaken to look ahead, but also to acknowledge what we have already achieved. Today, Gozo has a clear direction and a long-term vision; our aim now is to continue building on this progress and ensure that our priorities remain aligned with the real needs of the people of Gozo.”

The Gozo Minister also explained that Gozo’s development ”cannot be measured solely in terms of economic growth; it must also take into account quality of life, the creation of quality jobs, improved connectivity, a better-protected environment, and a more diversified and resilient economy.”

He noted that the Gozo Regional Development Strategy 2023-2033 has already established a vision for development that integrates economic progress with sustainability, resilience, and quality of life. This vision continues to be integrated with the perspective for Gozo within the Malta 2050 Vision.

Juergen Attard, CEO of the Gozo Regional Development Authority, explained that three years after the Strategy’s publication, the time has come for a comprehensive assessment of the progress achieved and the challenges that remain. ”This exercise will evaluate not only the extent of the Strategy’s implementation but also how economic, social, environmental, and policy realities have shifted over the past three years,” he said.

He emphasised that the process must be evidence-based, identifying areas where progress has been made, areas requiring further effort, and instances where adjustments might be needed for the remainder of the Strategy’s term.

He added that the Strategy must remain a ”living, relevant document that evolves alongside Gozo’s realities and continues to guide the island’s development in the years ahead. Minister Camilleri maintained that Gozo must develop in a way that respects the island’s unique character, communities, landscape, and environment, while creating new opportunities for young people, families, and businesses.”

Attard said that ”key priorities remaining on the agenda include strengthening infrastructure and connectivity; economic development and the creation of quality jobs; quality and sustainable tourism; innovation and digitalisation; agriculture and the rural economy; as well as the protection of the environment and the Gozitan identity.”

The Gozo Minister said that the ”Ministry for Gozo also views sustainability and climate resilience as integral to the island’s future development. This encompasses investment in cleaner energy, sustainable mobility, water resources, and infrastructure capable of better coping with the challenges of climate change. This also aligns with ongoing efforts to steer Gozo towards greater climate neutrality.”

Minister Camilleri emphasised that the Strategy must remain grounded in people’s daily realities. Therefore, the Ministry for Gozo will continue to work with the Gozo Regional Development Authority and the relevant entities to ensure that the review results in a stronger strategy – featuring clear and measurable objectives – that will continue to guide the island in the years ahead.”

Minister Clint Camilleri concluded by stating that ”the future of Gozo must be one built together, offering greater opportunities, a better quality of life, and a superior environment for future generations.”
