The Ministry for Gozo said that it has launched a scheme called “Public Art in Gozo,” which is intended to increase works of art being seen in public places in Gozo. The Ministry went on to say that this call for creativity from the vast talent of both Gozitan and Maltese artists, is the first of its kind in Malta, and is made with a view to promoting the creativity sector in helping the island to become a more attractive and interesting place.
The scheme was announced by the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, at the Citadel. The Minister said that through this call, both Gozitan and Maltese artists will have the opportunity to submit maquettes for selection, which could then be commissioned to be reproduced on a large scale to be placed in various public areas around Gozo. She added that in Gozo the ongoing works to embellish and improve public places, along with the positioning of the selected works of art will continue to improve these areas, such as the Villa Rundle Gardens, Victoria, Marsalforn, Xlendi and Mgarr. The Minister said that through this initiative it will create an exhibition of artistic works in the streets and gardens around Gozo, that will reflect the natural environment, culture and history of our Mediterranean island in the 21st century.
Proposals, together with the draft, will be accepted between Monday, the 21st and Friday, the 25th of February 2011, any submissions after this date will not be considered. Any interested artist may submit up to three pieces of art. They can apply for the contest individually or as a group.
All the maquettes presented will be displayed at an exhibition to be held in the Exhibition Hall of the Ministry for Gozo, during March 2010. The artists whose work is selected will recieve € 1000 for the transfer of the work of art to the Ministry..
