Gozo Minister emphasises need for greater support for artisnal fishingGozo Minister Clint Camilleri, while speaking during a visit to Brussels, has emphasised the need for greater support for artisanal fishing, as well as for European policies that recognise the specific needs of Gozo.

As part of the CPMR delegation, the Minister attended several meetings in Brussels – including one with DG MARE – where the future of European fisheries, along with fisheries policy and funding for the period beyond 2027, were discussed.

During these discussions, he highlighted that future fisheries policy must protect marine resources while simultaneously safeguarding the people and communities that depend upon them.

Minister Clint Camilleri stated, “we discussed the fisheries sector, which particularly impacts small regions and small islands, such as the island of Gozo. Among other points, we addressed the need for funding-not only for existing fishers but also for young people looking to enter the sector, including the children of older fishers. We must continue to invest – as has been, and is currently being, done effectively in agriculture, for instance through the ‘Young Farmers’ scheme. We believe this should be extended to fishers as well, if we truly wish to incentivize the fisheries sector – specifically artisanal, small-scale fishing, such as that practised by the fleets in Gozo and Malta – to ensure its continued success. Furthermore, this would ensure that high-quality products continue to reach our tables.”

He emphasised that for island regions like Gozo, environmental sustainability, economic viability, and territorial cohesion are mutually reinforcing pillars, essential for a resilient future. Minister Clint Camilleri mentioned the importance of Smart Specialisation Strategies as a tool for translating European priorities into concrete results at the local and regional levels.

He made these remarks during his closing address at the event “From Policy to Practice: Experience Talks on the Role of Smart Specialisation Strategies in the Future National and Regional Partnership Plans,” organised by EURADA and the Government of the Balearic Islands.

Minister Camilleri stated that “for island territories like Gozo, it is essential that European policies recognise our specific characteristics and needs, while helping us build upon our local advantages and potential.”

He added that Smart Specialisation Strategies offer an opportunity to identify niches where we can be more competitive and transform local assets into sustainable economic opportunities. However, he noted that strategies alone are not enough.

The Gozo Minister concluded by stating that effective governance, genuine collaboration among all stakeholders, and accessible funding are required to ensure that our priorities lead to tangible results for businesses, communities, and citizens. This is while emphasising that no region should be left behind.
