The next in the Work In Progress Seminar Series, by the Faculty of Arts, University of Malta, is titled – Of culture, parasites and ethnographers: Rethinking the place of anthropology in global health research, by Lisa Dikomitis.

With the increasing calls for large multidisciplinary teams in global health research, anthropology and ‘team ethnography’ features more and more as a theoretical and/or methodological approach. Such global health research relies on the collaboration among people in and across various communities, societies and countries.

Team members in these projects, however, often experience competing demands and obligations to and from the local communities in which they work; to and from team members in the different countries; to and from health policy makers; and to and from funding bodies.

Added to this mix is the pressure to maintain a consistent level of academic rigour, reflexivity and comprehensibility across field sites, cultures and contexts.

In this talk, Professor Dikomitis will reflect on the place of anthropology in such global health research, drawing on her experiences of global health research in a number of countries and projects (including SOLACE, www.solace-research.com, and ECLIPSE, www.eclipse-community.com and ORI, https://ori-community.com )

Professor Lisa Dikomitis, is Professor of Medical Anthropology and Social Sciences, Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, UK.

Convened by Prof Michael Briguglio, Dr Francois Zammit, Dr Dylan Cassar, Dr Niki Young, the seminar will take place on Thursday, the 29th of October 5-7pm Faculty of Arts Library, 2nd Floor, Old Humanities Building, University of Malta, Msida.
