Everyone has a responsibility to safeguard our country’s intangible heritage - PNTo mark the International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage on Saturday, the Nationalist Party reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding and promoting Malta’s intangible cultural heritage.

Justin Schembri Shadow Minister for the Arts, Culture and National Heritage, said in a statement that ”intangible cultural heritage is an essential part of our national identity, reflected in our traditions and the way we live as a society.”

He added, ”these are not simply customs inherited from the past, but living expressions of the history, values and identity that unite the people of Malta and Gozo.”

Schembri stated that, ”the Nationalist Party believes that safeguarding our cultural heritage should not be limited to preserving historic buildings and monuments, but should also encompass the people, agencies, entities, organisations and communities that keep these intangible traditions alive.”

”It is therefore essential to provide the necessary support and resources to voluntary organisations, band clubs, craftspeople, writers, artists and all those who, with commitment and dedication, continue to pass on their knowledge and skills to others,” he said.

The PN also thanked those working in the cultural and historical sectors to keep Maltese heritage alive and accessible in a digital world.

Schembri also stressed the importance of ”actively involving children and young people in this process and providing them with more educational opportunities to deepen their understanding of our national cultural heritage. Only in this way can we ensure that our heritage remains alive, relevant and appreciated in the future.”

He noted that UNESCO explains that the International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage serves as a reminder that this heritage is a unique treasure, while also offering an opportunity to recognise that the responsibility for safeguarding it rests not only with institutions, but with society as a whole.
