The full-time gainfully occupied population in October 2009 totalled 144,094, down by 1,765 when compared to the previous year and by 420 over the previous month.

According to labour market data provided by the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC) for October 2009, the labour supply decreased by 783 persons, or 0.5 per cent, over the corresponding month in 2008. The full-time gainfully occupied population decreased by 1,765 persons or 1.2 per cent, whilst the registered unemployed increased by 982 persons, or 15.5 per cent.

The labour supply in October 2009 amounted to 151,427 persons. Of these, the full-time gainfully occupied population amounted to 144,094 persons, while the registered unemployed totalled 7,333. The net decrease of 1,765 gainfully-occupied persons over the twelve-month period to October 2009 was attributed to a drop of 2,115 men and an increase of 350 women.

From September to October 2009, the labour supply decreased by 608 persons or 0.4 per cent. The full-time gainfully occupied population decreased by 420 persons or 0.3 per cent, whilst the registered unemployed decreased by 188 persons, or 2.5 per cent.

On a year-on-year basis, the full-time gainfully occupied population in the public sector decreased by 349 persons, while the employed population engaged in the private sector decreased by 1,416 persons. In the twelve months to October 2009, full-time employment decreased by 1,748 in Malta and by 17 in Gozo.

Economic activities

In the twelve months to October 2009, the economic activities which registered the main growth in full- time employment were real estate, renting and business activities (NACE 70-74); other community, social and personal service activities (NACE 90-93); and health and social work (NACE 85). Accordingly, the sector of real estate, renting and business activities (NACE 70-74) increased its employment by 647 persons. Other community, social and personal service activities (NACE 90-93) gained 305 persons. Health and social work activities (NACE 85) reported an increase of 302 persons.

The number of the gainfully occupied persons fell in manufacturing (NACE 15-37); hotels and restaurants (NACE 55); and construction (NACE 45). In fact, employment in manufacturing dropped by 1,611 persons, in hotels and restaurants by 649 persons and in the construction sector by 596 persons. Part-time employment

In the twelve months to October 2009, part-time employment rose by 2,181. Among part-timers who also hold a full-time job, there was an increase of 1,232 persons, while those having a part-time job as their primary occupation went up by 949.

From September to October 2009, part-time employment dropped by 82. Among part-timers who also hold a full-time job, there was an increase of 72 persons, whereas those having a part-time job as their primary occupation went down by 154.
