Partit Demokratiku has said that “a civilised society looks after all its members, including the poor and vulnerable. It is unfortunate that so many people have come to rely on Food banks and the news that Food banks are running low on food is very worrying: it is a sign that we have been relying on unsustainable charity for too long in order to feed the less fortunate in our society.”

It added that, “we need to create a long-lasting, sustainable system whereby nobody has to rely on charity in order to eat.”

Partit Demokratiku called on the government to liaise with social services, community groups and local experts in order to come up with a sustainable solution to people relying on food banks.

Partit Demokratiku also called on the government to take concrete action against food wastage. A law which is similar to that passed in France should be enacted to prevent food wastage.

“Such law would prevent supermarkets and catering establishments from disposing of the surplus of food which is good for human consumption and will instead have to donate it to charities or food banks. Food which is not good for human consumption can be either used for animal feed or turned into compost.”

“Such measures would serve as a short term solution until long term sustainable solutions are found to prevent people in our society from going hungry, concluded Partit Demokratiku.
