The Xaghra Local Council has said that it is unhappy about the present disastrous state of Ramla Bay, Gozo, which falls under its responsibility. This is happening when preparations are underway to begin the summer season during which several Gozitans, Maltese and foreigners choose Ramla bay for their leisure.
They said that on the sand there is a large quantity of stones which are dangerous for all those who visit the bay. The Xaghra Local Council said that they have been putting pressure on the authorities for several months so that these stones are removed. For this work to be done, the Council needs the permission of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) and the aid of the Gozo Ministry.
“We are disillusioned that although there is agreement that these stones must be removed, the MEPA is still dragging its feet and the necessary approval has not been given yet. The Xaghra Local Council is unhappy that on this case, the MEPA and the Gozo Ministry didn’t do anything and we encourage them to give attention to our appeal for the benefit of the residents and all those who visit Ramla Bay. Our residents definitely merit better than this situation,” the Council concluded.
Ramla Bay is a beautiful beach and popular with tourist, but like every thing in the world this beach has its enemy .
One of it is the Nadur Cemetery, after a rainy day the water from this cemetery special from the top, go down to this leisure Ramla Bay.
I am a regular user of this beach every month of the year. The comment about the new Nadur Cemetery appears very strange to me. The rainfall during December 2008 caused a great deal of rainwater to travel down the valleys. This flood scoured a deep channel through the sand, taking much of it out to sea. During 2009 much work has taken place to level what remains but this has exposed a large area of loose stones.
The beach cleaners have done a wonderful job during this winter as the sea has washed up heaps of dead jellyfish and burst cartons of chocolate bars washed off a passing ship.
With so much of the sand washed off the beach it is obviously beyond the scope of the local council to dredge replacement supplies. What could be done, however, since we do not have tides to achieve this, is to drag sand back from the sea edge and spread it over the whole area. The waves will then bring in more sand to fill the gap.
Most important for all is to remove all stones from the area to allow free run for both humans and animals (under strict control) who enjoy this rare unspoilt jewel on our coast.
Whilst on the subject of beaches I must comment on the state of that at Marsalforn, outside the police Station. This has been gradually scoured of much of its sand, especially after the dramatic flood and destruction of the bridge in 1994. Swimmers ho manage to survive the stony trek across the beach encounter huge algae-covered rock under the surface.
I am sure the addition of more sand, perhaps trapped in place by aligning the rock across the entrance, would make the area more enjoyable for all.

LOCAL AUTHORITIES DON’T WANT US TO CLEAN THE AREA. WE ARE STILL WAITING FOR THE GO AHEAD FROM MEPA.
Remember all of you, when it comes to the Election Date, Don’t forget to Kick them all OUT from the Government, To teach them a LESSON ..
Change your Government and you will get your results. How do they expect to have the Tourists to come the second TIME ???…
If they had any NOODLES IN THEIR BRAIN those Rocks at Ramla Beach would of been removed Months ago … But your Local AUTHORITIES , Specially MEPA do not give a HOOT about the locals or the Tourists. But they want the Money from The Tourists, for doing Nothing for them ………..
Send them Letters and let them know that you are not going to forget when Election Day comes next time around.
Please stop this flood of deterioration from the cemetery crossing through the beach, it is dangerous.
Everybody can see the channel running across the sand and into the sea ……but few know what actually passes through it.

@Xaghra Council ……To protect your Sunny lovely and wonderful Ramla L Hamra Bay, first of all you have to stop the Nadur cemetery.
Nadur doesn’t need it
Besides its beauty, the Ramla Bay has lots of history attached to it.
