At 7,556, registered unemployment in March increased by 473 persons when compared to the corresponding month last year, but decreased by 296 over the previous month.

In March, the number of registered unemployed stood at 7,556. Compared to the corresponding month in 2009, unemployment increased by 473 persons, or 6.7 per cent. On the other hand, the number of registered unemployed decreased by 296 persons, or 3.8 per cent, when compared to February 2010.
In Malta, registered unemployment totalled 6,778 persons, while that in Gozo stood at 778. In the twelve months to March 2010, unemployment only rose in the island of Malta by an absolute of 477 persons as compared to a drop of 4 persons in Gozo.
In the twelve months to March 2010, unemployment decreased among youths, but increased with respect to older persons. In fact, there was a slight drop of 6 persons registering for work among those aged under 20 and another of 61persons within the 20-24 year old age group. Increases in unemployment were registered among the 25-29 year old age bracket by 35 cases, the 30-44 year old age bracket by 123 cases and those aged 45 years and over by 382 cases. When compared to the preceding month, the number of registered unemployed decreased by 3.8 per cent.
Between March 2009 and March 2010, the number of persons registering for work for over one year increased by 427, or 19.4 per cent. On the other hand, those persons registering for employment for up to 20 weeks decreased by 114, or 3.4 per cent.
This release also provides information on the occupations being sought by the unemployed. Among men, occupations related to services and trades were the most common, whereas women sought more clerical or service-oriented jobs.
Registered Unemployment Rate: October 2009
In October 2009, the registered unemployment rate stood at 4.8 per cent of the labour supply. On a gender basis, the unemployment rate for men stood at 5.5 per cent, while that calculated for women stood at 3.4 per cent.
The long-term unemployment rate, referring to people who have been registering for work for more than twelve months, stood at 1.6 per cent.
The unemployment rate among older workers (45 years of age and over) was 4.9 per cent while that among young people (under 25 years of age) stood at 6.2 per cent.
