The stories covered in this weeks issue are:

1. Celebration Day was held at the Gozo College Victoria Primary School. Children were awarded for their achievement in school, including art and drama. The Year 4 children took part in a mime about Maltese traditions. Year 5 pupils sang Maltese Songs and danced to the music of Profs. Charles Camilleri.

The event included a photo story and speeches by Ms. Anita Sciberras Head of School, Chev. Frank Gatt the Gozo College Principal and the Minister for Gozo Giovanna Debono. Teaching staff, including George Mizzi drama teacher and Ms. Mariella Spiteri music teacher, helped in the organisation.

2. Victoria Scout Group is the President’s Group for 2010 – The Victoria Scout Group participated in the annual Scout and Guide parade held in Valletta on Sunday 11th April. This year’s rally was a very special one for members of this Scout group. At the end of the parade, the Cubs, Scouts, Ventures, leaders and some Council members of the Victoria Scout Group had a special meeting with the President of Malta, H.E. George Abela. They were accompanied by the Chief Scout, Mr. Kenneth De Martino and the Chief Commissioner Mr. Leslie Bonnici and the Honorary Secretary of the Association Mr. Robert Gonzi.

Following the activities held by various Scout Groups in aid of the Strina Campaign in December 2009, a special committee set up by the Scout Association of Malta had chosen the Victoria Scout Group as the President’s Group for the year 2010. The President welcomed the Group at the palace in Valletta and congratulated the Group Scout Leader, Mr. Lorrie Saliba and the members of the group for the honour bestowed on them earlier this year. H.E. George Abela presented the Group Scout Leader with a memento, a silver plaque engraved with the President’s signature. A group photo was later taken.

3. “Folklore in the Maltese Islands” is a new publication on the initiative of the Qala Local Council for dealing with folklore in the Maltese Islands. The book, by editor Euchar Mizzi, was published in full collaboration with the Parliamentary Secretariat for Consumer Protection, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Consultation.

During the launch of the publication, the Parliamentary Secretary, Chris Said, commended the initiative of the Qala Local Council for not only organising the annual international folk festival which has now entered the cultural calendar of Gozo, but also seeing what emerges from this activity is not lost and remains a point of reference for the future.
