The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, today launched the first phase of an information campaign aimed at the Maltese who spend their holidays in Gozo and the Gozitans themselves. The campaign is based on six messages that are associated with the concept of eco-Gozo, with the aim of raising awareness among the Maltese and Gozitans to protect the island of Gozo, which is one of the natural assets of the Maltese archipelago.
At a news conference, the Minister for Gozo said that these six messages were selected according to the key pillars that the eco-Gozo vision is based on, which was approved by the cabinet at the end of last year and which the government agreed an expenditure record of €25 million over three years. These pillars are the environment and nature, economy and employment in Gozo, education and training for Gozo, as well as it’s identity..
The main messages of this first phase of the information campaign are:
Electricity does not take a holiday! Prevent unnecessary use of lights when in Gozo.
The water does not take a holiday! Prevent wasted water when in Gozo.
The waste does not take a holiday! Keep waste separated when in Gozo.
Good work brings more work! Give the best you can to attract more jobs to Gozo.
The campaign is not just for the pictures! Let Gozo have a clean environment.
Be proud, don’t groan! Invest in the Gozitan product because it is good.
The Minister explained that the Government’s ultimate objective is that through eco-Gozo it will change peoples mentality towards ecological policies on the island of Gozo. They hope to encourage both Maltese and Gozitans to become more aware of their surroundings and environmental obligations in daily life as well as on their holidays. This includes turning off lights, air condtioning and other appliances when not in use, as well as separating waste.
The Minister said that two topics which are of great importance to life are key factors in Gozo. “Job creation in Gozo is a daily challenge,” said Minister Debono, while reiterating that this would be possible if everyone recognises the importance of Gozo. Therefore two messages were selected, to maintain that by doing a good job which will bring more work and the need for everyone to strongly promote the Gozitan product.
Meanwhile, the Minister for Gozo announced that this first phase of the campaign will take place through six different posters that will be distributed to shops and public buildings all around Gozo. The Ministry chose to launch these posters for the start of Notte Gozitana which is being held this weekend and is expected to attract many Maltese to Gozo.
The information campaign will enter into another phase at the beginning of the summer and continues with the last phase in October, once the children return to school from the summer vacation.

First and foremost its the Malta Resources Authority that should take good care of WATER ///// by stopping all development that does harm to spring water.
I am sure the posters are lovely and colourful. However, there is no such thing as eco-Gozo, so why is it being promoted at the tax-payers expense?
It would be a better idea to spend the 25 million on improving the roads and by that I do not mean the few spadefuls of sticky tarmac covered gravel, thrown into some of the potholes and maybe squashed down by a shovel if the worker is feeling energetic!
Shame on the Ministry for ignoring important things like rubble dumped at Dwejra and the proposed destruction of Hondoq in the name of ‘ECO-GOZO’ and the numerous other unnecessary, and illegal developments. I suppose that things like this are not lucrative enough?
You Gozitans should thank us for spending our holidays and spending money at our sister Inland Gozo.
It is the Gozitans them self that are ruining their environment and it l’ Ghawdexin spoiling, ruining, contaminating and wasting water, with that monstrous project that they are constructing on the way to Ramla il-Hamra Bay.
Hi to you all,Gozitans & Maltese.Please forgive me for butting into your issues, I have just returned from a rather short break to Malta with a lady friend(my last visit 10 years ago was for 2wks duration). On on this occasion we visited Gozo. In order to maximise the day we used the Hop On-Hop Off open top bus.
What a fabulous island you have,only spoiled by some very neglected roads out in the sticks, with no choice but to use them to get to some of your still wonderful “tourist must see place of interest”. I fail to see how other than by pure neglect the roads have reached their present states.The very precarious road down to the Azure Window passing the Craft Village to name but one. We have fallen in love with your little treasure, so much so that we are looking at ways of leaving the UK and living between Malta & Gozo to get the best of what both has to offer.
The roads do nothing to encourage the Eco Friendly use of cycles, I would not wish to punish my Beloved Bianchi on the pot hole riddled roads that the bus was being subjected to.The risk of being run off the road, without even a barrier rail on the sides to prevent in some cases an attempt to Impromptu Sky Dive as opposed to Pot Hole Dodging would make for an interesting alternative to watching the TV. Treasure your Islands and all that they stand for and mean to you,value and do not waste your minimal resources.Take to task those that waste and destroy without conscience. Improve the routes used by tourists and visitors to your islands,after all they are your lifeblood injections to your very continuity and economies.
Adopt a ZERO TOLERANCE to all that will deplete the attractions that your islands have to offer.
We were in Valletta during our break and I was horrified to see,albeit,a very nice and quite discreet McDonalds let down by some very idle individuals that had deposited their left over carry out bags on the pavement.The thin end of any wedge will eventually create a huge rift in an otherwise unspoiled landscape.

Over one thousand Gozitan students besides hundreds of Gozitan bank clerks, nurses, workers in the catering industry and in the public sector spend whole years spending their money all the year round in the sister island of Malta. If you are a frequent visitor of Gozo you surely notice Maltese truckloads of commodities ferried to Gozo which are distributed all over the island and bought by us Gozitans.You may also have noticed hundreds of Gozitans crossing daily over to Malta to make their shopping. The environment is being ruined by the reckless permits issued by the authorities concerned.
